Best way to get around Tokyo during a 5-day conference trip?

Post by Ategnatos »

Heading to an IT conference in Tokyo in a few weeks, staying for 5 days. Would be stupid not to explore the city while I'm there. You don't end up in Japan every day. How can I see as much as possible during my free time? What's the best way to move around the city efficiently?

Tokyo's train system is incredibly efficient and covers basically everywhere you'd want to go. Grab a Suica or Pasmo card and you can hop on any train or subway without thinking about tickets. Google Maps works perfectly for navigation, tells you which platform and which exit to use. Taxis exist but they're expensive and traffic can be brutal during rush hours. Walking between nearby spots is actually pleasant, the city's really pedestrian-friendly. Skip renting a car, parking is a nightmare and driving in Tokyo traffic isn't worth the stress.

Public transit handles most situations well, but it shuts down around midnight so late nights get complicated. Having your own wheels gives you flexibility to explore outside central Tokyo or hit spots that aren't near train stations. Check out car rental in Tokyo here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/japan/tokyo . Private owners list their cars there, prices run lower than commercial rental companies and terms are usually more flexible. Just know that parking costs add up quickly and navigation can be tricky if you're not used to Japanese road signs.
