Planning a trip to Sri Lanka, staying in Ratnapura
Been grinding pretty hard lately and Sri Lanka feels like the right place to finally decompress, see something completely different and just wander around without a schedule. Already locked in a hotel in Ratnapura so that part's sorted. Now trying to figure out how to actually get around once I'm there. Is public transport reliable enough to use day to day or would it make more sense to rent something and have the freedom to move on my own terms?
Re: Planning a trip to Sri Lanka, staying in Ratnapura
Public transport in Sri Lanka technically covers a lot of ground but the buses run on their own logic and timetables are more of a suggestion than a guarantee. For getting between major spots it works, but if you're based in Ratnapura and want to explore the surrounding area at your own pace you'll spend a lot of time waiting around. Renting a car is an option though the roads outside the cities can be narrow and chaotic if you're not used to driving there. Tuk-tuks are everywhere and useful for short distances but for anything further out you really need something you can rely on throughout the day.
Re: Planning a trip to Sri Lanka, staying in Ratnapura
Ratnapura sits right in the middle of some genuinely scenic terrain, the hill country around it is worth exploring properly rather than just catching glimpses from a bus window. Renting a bike gives you the range to get out to places that public transport simply doesn't reach on any reasonable schedule. You can rent a motorbike in Ratnapura right here: https://getrentacar.com/en-US/motorcycl ... -ratnapura . Pickup options, availability and pricing are all laid out there so you can have it ready before you even land.
